As a principal, I was asked by parents “Is my child too
young to learn art? There’s no right or wrong answer to this question but my
answer was always; ‘The child is ready when he/she hold a pencil and starts
scribbling. I have list down a few good points of early art education.
1)
Train the right brain hemisphere
When we are making arts, we are
indeed training our right brain which is used for emotional perception and creativity.
With arts, the child will be encouraged to learn through play and creativity.
2)
Enhance Motor Skills
Holding a pencil, painting a
picture, cutting a shape and etc is part of the fine motor skills training to
the child. At the same time, we cultivate the good attitudes of never give up
as well as the art of patience!
3)
Improves Social Skills
At home, a child may be
interested in making arts, but easily fade away. However, working with
‘friends’ of their age, will give the child the motivation to work, opportunity
to interact, to learn from each other and most important to work as a team.
This is a good training ground to prepare children for the pre-school year.
4)
Learning to express oneself
A child at this age may not able
to communicate his/her feeling but through arts the child indirectly tells us
their feeling, whether they are happy, sad, or excited.
5)
Creating self esteem
Starting the lesson from easy to
difficult will slowly boost the child’s confidence. With this, we can slowly
provide more challenging task for the child to grow.
